we used the same lighting situation for both shots, but in the first image the model's head is slightly turned so that the light is in between a 90 degree angle and 135 degree angle to the model's face.

For our image we had a harsh light that was placed behind the subject and to her left, the light was placed slightly above the subject's left side of her face. We used a reflector to decrease some of the shadow from her nose.

We used a light with an umbrella up high on the right. We used a gobo to keep the light from hitting the background. We had another light more in front with no umbrella.
