Artist Post

Lauren Greenfield's Girl Culture is a series that touches upon some of the things I care about the most in regardes to my own work. As I said during class one of the things that interests me the most is the way people perceive themselves and how that affects our lives. Lauren's work explores this in a different way then I plan too. Her search is narrowed to women and to people that her job in the media has given her access to. The work is a deep exploration of how women get themselves ready to be societies idea of "perfect". It's about consumerism that is aimed directly at young women. In the artist statement Lauren explains exactly the events that led her to starting this series. Young women bond over buying clothes, getting their nails done, and things of that nature. She mentions that some of the earliest ways she learned about having to do this was taught to her because she wanted to bond with the other girls around her. These ideals are ingrained into our society and into us as girls. My own work would be more of an exploration of both sexes and a much more direct approach then watching the habits of people. However, I have a great respect for this work because as I girl I can relate to it.
